WHAT IS ROSEMALING?

        The Folk Art of Rosemaling originated in the quiet green valleys and high rugged mountains of rural Norway.  In the 1600’s Norwegians began painting their soot stained walls and furniture with artistic designs inspired by summer flowers and tumbling waterfalls. 

        Often isolated by their geography, regions developed their own identity through their arts.  Bunads (the national folk dress), wood carving, and painting (rosemaling) developed to show regional preferences.     READ MORE >

In this photo I am making lefse with my Norwegian Grandma, Ragnahild Rolfsness, 1959. Who could have guessed that as an adult I would keep my heritage alive by embracing Rosemaling!
